It may surprise you to learn that much academic writing and scientific writing needs improvement. After all, those who do the writing are well educated and have important things to communicate. Further, they are highly intelligent, as their command of the English vocabulary indicates. However, they may not write frequently enough to develop strong writing skills. Another reason may be that they simply devote insufficient effort to their writing. The result is that their writing is not always easily understood by their readers. If they don't spend the effort necessary, their readers may be required to do so.
What do I mean? Simply that it takes more effort to write well than to write poorly. For example, it is easier to write very long, rambling sentences than it is to write short, pithy sentences, which can be quickly read and easily understood. Have you ever found it necessary to read a very long sentence two or three times in order to grasp its meaning? The sentence may have been so long that you had forgotten parts of it by the time you had reached its end. Such long sentences are found frequently in academic and scientific writing.
Some writers find it tempting to write in the passive voice, rather than in the active voice. Use of the passive voice helps one to remove the "I" and "we" from the sentence. This makes the writing appear to be more impartial and, therefore, more logical. However, this also makes a sentence more difficult to read. The reader must slow down in order to grasp the full meaning. It takes him longer to discover who does what to whom and why.
These are examples of two problems that are common in academic and scientific writing. However, if a writer wishes to communicate his thoughts quickly, easily, and accurately to readers, he must minimize his use of such construction. If he or she cannot meet this challenge, an editing service, such as English Writing Services, must.
